Former Purple Sox supervisor Alex Cora, who was fired final week together with 5 different coaches, was clearly prepared to go away Boston.
He texted a number of outstanding reporters, “I am completely happy,” hours after his firing. He posted photos to his Instagram of him and his employees consuming dinner and smiling. He turned down the Phillies job this week as a result of he mentioned he was wanting ahead to spending time with household.
It was an unsightly finish to a protracted relationship, and, clearly, it was time. However that does not imply Cora was all the time sad in Boston — a spot he not solely coached for practically a decade, but additionally performed.

In line with MassLive, Cora despatched a mass e-mail to the group this week, thanking them for his or her assist, praising them for his or her service, and, above all, reminding them not to take Fenway Park without any consideration.

“Being a part of this group has meant a fantastic deal to me. As a participant and as a supervisor. Like I all the time inform free brokers, I’m glad my youngsters grew up right here. It’s distinctive, particular and magical,” Cora wrote. “Thanks for treating me with respect and most significantly settle for me as AC. I’m grateful for this expertise, it made me higher.
“We’re completely happy to have the time to be full time mother and father, that’s the reality, but additionally we’re upset that we didn’t end the job. I respect the course the group is taking. A number of gifted folks will assist to perform the last word aim, having one other duck boat parade. Thanks for the onerous work, sleepless nights, professionalism and energy to assist me lead this nice group.
“One last item, preserve exhibiting up on a regular basis and don’t take the Fenway expertise without any consideration, your working place is one of the best on the earth.”
Alex Cora was not the issue
I’ve ripped the Purple Sox fairly good for weeks now. I noticed the writing on the wall with this roster about 10 days into the season. It stinks. Anybody who thinks Alex Cora was the issue resides in a fantasy world.
So, sure, I used to be unhappy to see Cora go, particularly as a result of it meant Craig Breslow (and John Henry) stayed. In the event you’re making an inventory of all of the Purple Sox issues, Henry and Breslow can be to this point forward of Alex Cora, I am not even positive they’d be on the identical web page.
The Sox made a shock playoff run final yr, after which fully folded over the offseason. Breslow, as he is executed for years now, whiffed on everybody. Everybody. Alex Bregman. Pete Alonso. Kyle Schwarber. The Sox wanted one bat. They as an alternative misplaced one, and acquired none.

Breslow then determined to hold on to all 5 of his outfielders, as an alternative of buying and selling one or two to handle one other place of want. Now, the group is caught with a predictable logjam within the outfield, and within the lineup.
He changed Alex Bregman — the group’s unquestioned chief final season — with Caleb Durbin at third base. That has been an unmitigated catastrophe.

He traded Kyle Harrison — the highest participant the group acquired again within the Rafael Devers commerce — to Milwaukee. Harrison is at present 2-1 this season with a 2.28 ERA. That may be, by far, the bottom ERA of any starter within the Purple Sox rotation proper now.
The Cora firing was coming. You may really feel it over these previous few weeks. Frankly, I do not blame him for being completely happy. It is like being the final passenger off the Titanic. He made out like a bandit right here.
However he additionally beloved the group, and town, and, most of all, the followers. He made that clear for the eight years he was right here, and he made it clear once more in that e-mail.

No one beloved Fenway — and the ambiance Fenway created — greater than Alex Cora. He noticed it as a participant once they received a World Collection in 2007. He noticed it as a supervisor in 2018, and 2021, and, to an extent, briefly final season.
It is a disgrace the subsequent time he’ll see will probably be as an opposing supervisor.
Hope Breslow loved studying that e-mail!
