Developer Beautiful Hellplace’s debut undertaking, Dread Delusion, is certainly one of my favourite indie video games from the previous few years. This open-world motion RPG could have been first launched in 2024, however it’s a religious successor to older fantasy adventures, borrowing most closely from the alien world and narrative freedom of The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind.
If in-depth fight is what you are searching for, this may not be the sport for you. However if you wish to discover questlines with a number of options (and no proper reply), Dread Delusion may scratch that itch. And in basic RPG style, sure quest outcomes could solely be achievable in case your character focuses on brute power, peaceful compromise or sneaky subterfuge. It is entertaining to play out every character archetype to its full potential, which makes Dread Delusion extraordinarily replayable.
The place Dread Delusion actually shines is its worldbuilding — it is a recreation the place you may search out each non-playable character to exhaust their dialogue choices, learn each ebook and discover each secret simply to find extra concerning the Oneiric Isles. We’re residing in a darkish fantasy gaming renaissance, and Dread Delusion’s depiction of a crusader church forcing an inquisition on a local peoples’ floating island homeland is an excellent synthesis of grim fiction and real-world historical past.
There is not any handholding on this recreation, so it is as much as you the place to go first, what you may uncover and who you may ally with within the battle brewing between the crusaders and the outdated god worshippers. Dread Delusion is simply pretty much as good as a few of Bethesda or Obsidian’s finest work, which is excessive reward from an open-world RPG fan. And with PlayStation-inspired graphics, it is a excellent match for the hybrid Change 2 console.
